Accessibility statement
How the Centre works to make its website usable by everyone, what we know is not yet right, and how to tell us about a problem.
This page is being finalised. A few details, such as the organisation’s registered name and address, are still to be confirmed.
Our commitment
The Center for US-Pakistan Affairs wants everyone to be able to use its website, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, magnification, voice control or other assistive technology.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. This statement applies to cupa.org.pk.
What we have done
- Clear structure. Pages use proper headings, lists, landmarks and labels, so that screen readers can find their way round. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing on every page.
- Keyboard access. Menus, search, filters, the photo viewer and the newsletter pop-up all work with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. Pop-ups keep focus inside them while they are open and return it when they close.
- Images. Images that carry meaning have text descriptions. Photo galleries cannot be published until every photo has one, and a photo without a description stays hidden from visitors.
- Charts and data. Charts come with the underlying figures as a table or a CSV download, so you do not have to read values off a picture.
- Video and audio. Videos and podcast episodes can have captions and transcripts, and nothing plays by itself.
- Movement. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, the site turns off animations and smooth scrolling.
- Colour and text. Text and controls are designed to meet the WCAG AA contrast ratios. Colour is never the only way information is shown. You can zoom to 200%, and the layout adapts to small screens without scrolling sideways.
- Forms. Every field has a visible label. Errors are explained in words next to the field and announced to screen readers, and what you typed is kept when a form needs correcting.
- Works without scripts. Pages and forms work without JavaScript. Scripts only add conveniences.
Known limitations
We know that some parts of the site do not yet fully meet the standard:
- PDF documents. Some publications and reports, especially older ones and those produced by partners, are PDF files that may not be fully accessible to screen readers. We are happy to send you the text in another format.
- Interactive map. The map in the Provinces guide is easiest to use with a mouse or touch screen. The same information is available in the list of provinces and the comparison table on the same page.
- Video players and audio. Once you press play, videos are shown in YouTube's or Vimeo's own player, which we do not control. Not every older video or podcast episode has captions or a transcript yet.
- Content from others. Documents, embedded posts and pages on other websites that we link to may not meet the same standard.
We have not yet had the website independently audited. This statement is based on our own checks.
Tell us about a problem
If something on the website is hard to use, or you need information in a different format, such as accessible text, large print or an audio recording, please email info@cupa.org.pk. Tell us the address of the page and what went wrong. We aim to reply within five working days.
You can also use the contact form.
Technical details
The website is built with standard HTML and CSS, with a small amount of JavaScript. It is designed to work with current versions of the major browsers and assistive technologies.
