    Educational exchange (Fulbright) agreement

    Set up a binational commission for educational exchange, now the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan, which runs the Fulbright programme. The first Pakistani grantees travelled in 1951 and the first Americans arrived in 1952.

    The treaty that created SEATO. The United States limited its commitment under Article IV(1) to communist aggression; Pakistan hoped the alliance would strengthen it against India.

    The United States undertook, in case of aggression against Pakistan, to take appropriate action, including the use of armed force as mutually agreed. The two countries later read the commitment differently.

    A ten-year agreement for an American communications facility at Badaber, near Peshawar, which became a major US listening post.

    Status ExpiredA ten-year term; Pakistan gave notice and it lapsed in July 1969. The Americans left in January 1970.

    Issued at the end of Bhutto's official visit of 18 to 20 September 1973. Nixon assured him of strong US support for Pakistan's independence and territorial integrity, which he called a guiding principle of American foreign policy.
