Secondary sanctions

law & sanctions.

US sanctions aimed at non-US persons, such as foreign companies and banks, that engage in significant transactions with a sanctioned country or party, even when no US person or territory is involved. Rather than fines, the usual penalty is losing access to the US financial system or market. They are used mainly against dealings with Iran, Russia and North Korea, and so bear on Pakistani projects with Iran such as the Iran–Pakistan gas pipeline.12
