The Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz are among the world's most important routes for oil and gas exports. Tensions between Iran and the United States, and between Iran and some Gulf Arab states, have long shaped security in the region. Pakistan borders Iran, has close ties with the Gulf monarchies and imports much of its energy from the Gulf, so instability there directly affects its economy and diplomacy.
