Overview
Since 2001 the United States has pursued a global campaign against al-Qaeda, the Islamic State and affiliated groups, using military force, sanctions, intelligence cooperation and terrorist designations, including the sanctions lists maintained by the UN Security Council. Pakistan has been both a counterterrorism partner and one of the countries most affected by terrorist violence, and cooperation on these issues has long been central to US–Pakistan relations.
