China’s programme of infrastructure, trade and investment links across Asia, Africa and Europe, announced by President Xi Jinping in 2013: the overland “Silk Road Economic Belt” in Kazakhstan in September and the “21st-Century Maritime Silk Road” in Indonesia in October. The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is one of its largest country programmes. The United States has criticised the debt and transparency terms of some BRI lending.^1,2
