Most-favoured-nation treatment
trade. Also MFN, MFN status, most-favored-nation
The basic World Trade Organization rule that a member must give every other member trade terms, such as tariff rates, no less favourable than those it gives its most favoured partner; free-trade agreements and preference schemes are exceptions. “MFN tariffs” are a country’s standard rates. India withdrew MFN treatment from Pakistan in February 2019 after the Pulwama attack, raising duties on Pakistani goods to 200 per cent; Pakistan had not granted India MFN status.12
