India and Pakistan have contested Jammu and Kashmir since the partition of British India in 1947, and the dispute has been at the centre of several wars and repeated crises between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Pakistan's position is that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir should be decided in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Crisis management between the two countries has often involved the United States.
