The Indus Waters Treaty, signed by India and Pakistan in 1960 with the World Bank as a signatory, divides the rivers of the Indus system: the eastern rivers to India and the western rivers, the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab, largely to Pakistan. Pakistan's agriculture depends heavily on the Indus system, which makes the treaty's operation a matter of national importance.
