Southeast Asia Treaty Organization

security. Also SEATO, Manila Pact

A collective-defence organisation created by the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty, signed in Manila on 8 September 1954 by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan. Built to resist communist expansion in Southeast Asia, it had no standing forces of its own. Pakistan, which had hoped it would help in disputes with India, later withdrew, and the organisation was dissolved on 30 June 1977.12
