The fighting between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil sector, after forces from the Pakistani side occupied heights on the Indian side of the Line of Control. It came months after the Lahore Declaration and a year after both countries’ nuclear tests. On 4 July 1999 Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met President Clinton at Blair House and agreed to steps to restore the Line of Control; the withdrawal followed in July.12
