Use of AI tools

How authors, reviewers and editors may and may not use generative AI.

Generative AI tools can help with some tasks, but they cannot take responsibility for scholarly work.

Authors

  • AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Authors are responsible for everything in their manuscript, including any text, analysis or images produced with the help of AI.
  • Authors who used generative AI for anything beyond basic spelling and grammar checks, for example drafting text, summarising literature, translating, or generating code, data or images, must say so in the AI-use statement on the submission form, naming the tool and describing how it was used.
  • Check AI-assisted content carefully. AI tools can produce plausible but false statements and invented references.

Reviewers and editors

Manuscripts under review are confidential. Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts, or parts of them, to generative AI tools, and must not use such tools to write reviews or decision letters.
